A brief details about the Mitchell Scholarship Program, named to honor former US Senator George Mitchell’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service.

The US-Ireland Alliance is a proactive, non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to consolidating existing relations between the United States and the island of Ireland and building that relationship for the future.

Scholarship Award: 

  • The Mitchell Scholarship Program provides tuition, accommodation, a stipend for living expenses and travel.

Eligibility: 

All eligible candidates who are prepared to enter a rigorous Scholarship competition are encouraged to apply. Candidate for the Mitchell Scholarship Program must meet all the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be 18 years of age or older, but not yet 30, on September 30 of the year of application (those who turn 30 on 1 October are not eligible).
  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university before beginning study as a Mitchell Scholar. Degrees from international accredited universities are acceptable, if all other conditions are met.
  • While married applicants or applicants with partners are accepted, no allowance is made for the expenses of an applicant’s spouse, partner, or dependents. It is important to note that the relevant government agency may require spouses or partners who are non-EU citizens to enroll full-time and prove financial resources for the year or to obtain a work permit before seeking paid employment in Ireland or Northern Ireland.

College Admission Requirement:

  • Entrance Requirement: Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university before beginning study as a Mitchell Scholar.
  • Test Requirement: Neither the results of the GRE, nor of any other test are required or considered in the selection process.
  • English Language Requirement: The candidate should have a very good command of the English language.

Closing Date for Applications: 

  • The application deadline is September 29, 2019.

Materials applicant will need to complete the Mitchell Scholarship application:

  • Passport-style photo (PDF)
  • All transcripts scanned into a single PDF (please block out Social Security number if visible). This should include any undergraduate and graduate work they have completed. They may upload unofficial transcripts.  Official transcripts will be required at the finalist stage in November.
  • Personal statement (1,000 words maximum – most applicants find it helpful to write this in advance). The personal statement or essay is their opportunity to share their personality, passion, and drive with the selection committee that cannot be communicated elsewhere in the application materials. Applicant will be required to affirm that this is their original work and that no one has assisted them with the personal statement in any way (see below).
  • A scan of signature (PDF)
  • Proof of US Citizenship
