Step 4: Tick the “Show course comments” and “Show finals schedule”

Step 4: Select General Education (GE) filter

Starting Fall, 2008, candidates for a bachelor’s degree at UC Irvine must satisfy the General Education (GE) course requirement by taking a specific number of courses in each of the following categories:

GE I-A   Lower Division Writing
GE I-B Upper Division Writing
GE II Science and Technology
GE III Social and Behavioral Sciences
GE IV Arts and Humanities
GE V Quantitative, Symbolic, and Computational Reasoning
GE VI Language Other Than English
GE VII Multicultural Studies
GE VIII International/Global Issues
GE IX Laboratory or Performance

To see which courses satisfy a particular category, go to the Schedule of Classes and select a category in the General Education pull-down menu.

Refer to the UC Irvine’s General Catalog for more information about the General Education requirements, in the Requirements for a Bachelor’s Degree section.

Prior to the Fall 2008 term, instead of the General Education requirements listed above, UC Irvine specified a set of required Breadth categories:

I-A   Lower Division Writing
I-B Upper Division Writing
II Natural Sciences
III Social and Behavioral Sciences
IV Humanistic Inquiry
V Mathematics and Symbolic Systems
VI Language Other Than English
VII-A Multicultural Studies
VII-B International/Global Issues

Because students enrolled before Fall 2008 have the option of satisfying either the old Breadth requirements or the newer General Education requirements, the General Education pull-down menu in the Schedule of Classes allows you to select from either set of categories.

Step 5: Select “Department Name” or preferably include all departments

The academic unit (i.e., “Physics“, “Art History“, etc.) that sponsors each course.

Note: The returned list of courses may be truncated if you specify a large department unless you use some of the other criteria below to narrow the search (for instance, a Course NumberCourse Code Range, upper or lower division for Course Level, or the Course Type).

Step 6: Select the “Course Number or Range”

The department’s designation for an approved course (e.g. Art History 198, Social Ecology 10, French 1c). This field searches the database for the course numbers as listed in the UCI General Catalogue or WebSOC, the Schedule of Classes. You may list single course numbers or a course number range, such as 5-20.
Specifying a range or digits alone will show a match with any course containing that number (for instance, “1” for the Chemistry department might display classes matching Chemistry 1B, 1LB, 1C, and 1LC), while adding letters will only return an exact match (i.e., “1C” in the example above will only display Chemistry 1C).

Step 7: Select the “Course Level”

This field allows you to limit the search to Lower Division (course numbers 1 through 99), Upper Division (course numbers 100 through 199), or Graduate/Professional courses (course numbers 200 and higher). This is an easy way to limit the number of courses returned for large departments.

Step 8: Type in the “Course Code or Range”

The 5-digit code representing a class in the printed Schedule of Classes (e.g. 29001).

You may specify a list of single codes or a range of codes. For instance, the course code range 03000-06999 would allow a search across all departments in the School of the Arts.

Step 9: Type the “Instructor’s” Name

This field searches the database for classes taught by a particular instructor. Enter the last name only, in upper or lower case.

Hint: If the instructor’s last name is short and matches too many other last names (e.g., “frank” would return all instructors named Frank, and also instructors named Franke and Franklin), place a comma directly after the last name (“Frank,” — instead of — “Frank“) to exclude longer last names.

Step 10: Type the “Course Title” keyword

This field searches the database for course titles that contain the word you specify. For example, photo would match courses named BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY and ADV PHOTO for the department of Studio Art.

Step 11: Select “Course Type”

This pull-down menu allows you to specify the class type you are searching for:

ACT    Activity COL    Colloquium
DIS Discussion FLD Field Work
LAB Laboratory LEC Lecture
QIZ Quiz RES Research
SEM Seminar STU Studio
TAP Tutorial Assistance Program TUT Tutorial

This field provides an easy way to limit the number of courses returned for large departments.

Step 12: Type in the “Course Units”

This field searches the database for classes offered on (but not limited to) the days you specify. Entering ‘W‘ will return all the classes that have Wednesday as one of their meeting days. Entering ‘MTu‘ will return classes that meet on both Monday and Tuesday (and possibly other days of the week as well).

You can use any of the following abbreviations:

Su or Sun Sunday
MMo, or Mon Monday
TuTue, or Tues Tuesday
WWe, or Wed Wednesday
ThThu, or Thur Thursday
FFr, or Fri Friday
SSa, or Sat Saturday

Step 13: Select the “Start after time”

This field restricts the search to courses that start on or after the time specified.

Step 14: Select the “Ending time before”

This field restricts the search to courses that end by the time specified.

Step 15: Choose “Maximum Capacity”

This input option limits your search to courses that have an enrollment capacity that matches your specification.

For example, “<21” (to denote less than 21) or “>200” (to denote more than 200).

Step 16: Select “Courses Full Option”

You can use this option to exclude courses that have reached their maximum capacity or include the ones that still have room on their Waiting List.

Step 17: Choose “Web Font Size Percentage”

Use this option to adjust the font size in the results page. For example, 75 percent will make all characters 3/4 normal size, while 150 percent will make them 50% larger.

This option only works if JavaScript mode is enabled on your web browser.

Step 18: Click on the “Display Web Results” or Display Text Results” to see your entry.

You are done!
